4.5 inch Image Orthicon tube front view

The 4.5 inch Image Orthicon tube is acknowledged to have produced the best live television pictures under normal conditions in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

 

It is a complex tube with many controls and adjustments. It had to be operated at an optimum and controlled temperature with heaters and cooling fans. EMI recommend 40°C. with min/max of 35-50°C.
